August 5, 2010 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Thursday, August 5, 2010) - For the second consecutive year, the Utah State University women's soccer program will call Rio Tinto Stadium home for a night, as the Aggies will play host to a collegiate soccer doubleheader in Sandy on Friday, August 20. The evening, featuring matches between four Beehive State-based universities, will start at 5:00 p.m. MT when Utah Valley University challenges Southern Utah University, followed by the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. between Utah State and Weber State University.
Tickets for the doubleheader will cost $5 for all seats in the lower seating bowl (excluding 100 Lions sections on the west side), while children 17-and-under wearing a soccer jersey to the contest will be allowed free admittance with a paid adult ticket. Tickets can be purchased online at www.RioTintoStadium.com or in person at the Rio Tinto Stadium Box Office on Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. MT.
"Playing in Rio Tinto Stadium was one of the highlights of our 2009 season, so when the opportunity to play there again this year came up, we jumped at it," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "It is one of the premier soccer facilities in the country. They are fantastic hosts, and the atmosphere there is incredible."
Utah State enjoyed its first visit to Rio Tinto Stadium last September, as an overtime goal by Shantel Flanary gave the Aggies a 2-1 victory in their rivalry game against the University of Utah, marking USU's first win over the Utes since 1997. The August 20 doubleheader will mark the beginning of the season for all four women's soccer clubs, giving the programs a chance to open up their 2010 campaigns in a world-class venue and atmosphere.
The collegiate twin-bill serves as the latest example of Rio Tinto Stadium's continued commitment to the showcasing of women's soccer in the State of Utah, as past events within the last year have included the U.S. Women's National Team's international friendly against Mexico in March, the UHSAA Girls High School Championships last October, and a handful of additional high school exhibition and regular season contests.
