USA Today Sports Weekly Snubs Roosters, Frontier League

June 18, 2003 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release

RICHMOND, INDIANA--- Lisa Winston, sports writer and minor league baseball reporter for the USA Today Sports Weekly, informed the Roosters recently that she no longer wanted to receive e-mail information on the team.

"We put together a local, regional and national list for media, and she was on our list," said Deanna Beaman, General Manager of the Roosters. "We've always admired her work on minor league baseball, and what she does with our materials is her business," she said, "she can use it or not. But when she tells us (via e-mail) she no longer wants to receive our materials, we can only assume she doesn't care about the independent segment of minor league baseball or the Frontier League.

In the past, USA Today Sports Weekly -- formerly USA Today Baseball Weekly – has provided little or no information on the Frontier League, despite the fact that eight Frontier League alumni have made it to the big show, including tonight's starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Jason Simontacchi. Perhaps if they had included coverage on the Frontier League and other independent baseball leagues, they could still call it "Baseball" Weekly.

"What we have accomplished -- two league titles over the past two years is nothing short of a minor miracle," Beaman said. "But if they (USA Today Sports Weekly) want to ignore it, that's fine. But to tell us not even to send the materials...that's just plain wrong.

Beaman said she would discuss the matter with league Commissioner Bill Lee to see what could be done to convince this major national publication to pay more attention to the best game in baseball, the independents.
