USA Hockey Invites Waterloo Players to Evaluation Camp

Waterloo, Iowa-Later this summer, at least six players who have worn a Waterloo Black Hawks sweater will audition for the opportunity to skate in red, white, and blue amid USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, New York.

On Thursday, USA Hockey announced the list of 40 forwards and defensemen who have been invited to the try-out, which will be conducted from August 3rd through 10th. Top performers during the event will be leading candidates to represent the United States during the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships, which begin in late December.

The camp roster includes forwards Taylor Cammarata, Vince Hinostroza, Zach Stepan, and Brady Vail, plus defensemen Ian McCoshen and Nick Ebert. Cammarata, Hinostroza, Stepan, and McCoshen were all Black Hawks last season. Vail and Ebert were members of the 2009/10 Black Hawks. Waterloo's representation during the August Evaluation Camp could swell later this month when goaltenders are formally invited after a preliminary on-ice goalie assessment in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which begins next week.

Last winter, the United States won the World Junior tournament and has claimed a medal during three of the last four events. The 2014 Championships will be held in Malmo, Sweden. The final U.S. roster for the event will include 20 skaters and three goalies. To get a flavor of international competition, the Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid will culminate with exhibition games against opponents from Canada, Finland, and Sweden.

The last player with connections to the Black Hawks to be chosen for the U.S. National Junior team was defenseman Patrick Wey for the 2011 tournament. Waterloo has not had two players appear for any national junior team during the same winter since Jan-Mikael Juutilainen and Siim Liivik represented Finland in 2008.
