Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawk forward and Waterloo West High School valedictorian Jake Horton has been honored by the United States Hockey League with the circuit's 2012/13 Scholar Athlete Award, the league announced Thursday.

Horton is the only Black Hawks player to ever win the award, which was first presented at the conclusion of the 2007/08 season. He shares the honor with Tyler Moy of the Omaha Lancers. Players are recommended for the Scholar Athlete Award by team and school staff, with the winner determined by a review of school participation and coursework.

"What a player does away from the rink in school and the community is just as important as what they learn about hockey," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Jake achieved a lot - under challenging circumstances - and what he accomplished through perseverance and determination will last long after he is done playing hockey."

In January, the Lake Elmo, Minnesota, native suffered a leg injury which ended his season prematurely. Despite also missing significant time in class while recuperating at home, Horton maintained high marks in his second semester classes, Contemporary Literature, Behavioral Psychology, Creative Writing, and World History, completing his assignments independently for several weeks. He was one of eleven valedictorians at West High, the third school he has attended in four years while pursuing his hockey goals.

Prior to being knocked out of the lineup, Horton played 28 games for the Black Hawks, recording seven goals and five assists. Of his twelve points, four were on special teams, including two power play and two shorthanded goals. From October 28th through November 3rd, Horton had a season-long three-game point streak. An important penalty killer, the Black Hawks anticipate that Horton will return to Waterloo for the 2013/14 season as he seeks to secure an NCAA college commitment.
