Minnesota United FC News Release
Minnesota Stars FC announced Wednesday that its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round match on Tuesday, May 29, against Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer will now be played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Kick off is set for 8 p.m. CST. The match will be broadcast live via the internet for Stars fans to view. Details on an official watch party will follow before the end of the week.
"We are very excited to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup after a valiant effort by our team in Des Moines Tuesday night," said Stars FC CEO Djorn Buchholz. "I want to thank all of the fans who traveled to Des Moines to help us advance. Their presence was heard loud and clear."
In regards to the change of venue, Buchholz stated: "We were presented with a business opportunity to change the venue of this match to Rio Tinto Stadium that we could not pass up. As we continue working to ensure the long-term viability of Minnesota Stars FC, sometimes difficult decisions must be made, and this was one of them. But history has shown that Minnesota pro soccer teams have what it takes to go on the road and get a result, and we believe this team has just that."
Should the Stars advance against Real Salt Lake, the fourth round U.S. Open Cup matches will take place on Tuesday, June 5. Potential matchups and home venues were announced Wednesday.
