Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) April 29, 2014 - Giovanny Urshela's two-run, sixth-inning home run and Francisco Lindor's two-out, RBI single in the seventh inning helped the Akron RubberDucks rally from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Binghamton Mets, 4- 3, on Tuesday night at Canal Park.
Akron starter Kyle Davies got off to a shaky start, allowing a first-inning run on a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and an RBI single by Binghamton designated hitter Matt Clark. The RubberDucks (14-11) responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when outfielder Tyler Naquin led off with a single to center, then stole second base and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Lindor groundout to first.
Davies was roughed up again in the second inning when first baseman Jayce Boyd and catcher Xorge Carrillo led off with back-to-back singles, but Boyd was cut down by leftfielder Tyler Holt trying to advance to third base. The costly baserunning play by the Mets (12-10) cost them on the scoreboard when the next hitter, second baseman Wilfredo Tovar, launched a two-run home run to left field to make the score 3-1 Mets.
Davies would settle in and not allow a run over his final three innings on the mound (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP), keeping Akron in the game until the offense could find some success against Binghamton starter Hansel Robles, who kept the Ducks in check in the second through fifth innings.
It was Naquin who got things rolling again in the sixth inning with a leadoff double to center. After Lindor struck out, Urshela launched his fifth home run of the season to left-center field to tie the game at 3-3.
Due to three scoreless innings by Akron reliever Jordan Cooper (2-0), who picked up his second win in consecutive relief appearances, the RubberDucks were able to eventually take the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Lindor singled through the whole on the right side of the infield to score designated hitter Justin Toole who reached earlier in the frame on a single and went to third on a bunt attempt by Naquin.
Closer Tyler Sturdevant earned his second straight save with a scoreless ninth inning, helping the RubberDucks take the first two games in the three-game series and give the team its longest winning streak of the season at four.
Naquin, Lindor, and Holt, who returned to the lineup for the first time since Friday when he banged his head on a play in right field, each had two hits. Lindor and Urshela each had a pair of RBI too.
The series wraps up Wednesday with a 10:35 a.m. Education Day matchup between Akron RHP Gabriel Arias (2-2, 2.32 ERA) and Binghamton RHP Greg Peavey (0-1, 5.51 ERA). Wednesday 's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
