July 8, 2009 - NBA G League (G League)
Maine Celtics News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws will partner with Unum to provide local children the opportunity to attend basketball games during the 2009-10 season. The Unum's Shooting Stars program will supply 75 tickets for every Red Claws home game to schools or nonprofit organizations. The announcement was made today by Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings.
"We are honored to join forces with a company with such a long and respected history in Maine and one that has long demonstrated a strong commitment to the community," Jennings said. "The Unum's Shooting Stars program will provide 1,800 area children with the opportunity to come to a Red Claws game, an opportunity they might not otherwise have. When we made the decision to bring the Red Claws to Maine, we made a commitment to give back as much as we could to our community. Thanks to Unum, who has long track record of doing just that, we can reach out to 1,800 kids."
"The new program is part of a culture of giving back to the communities where Unum employees live and work," said Joe Foley, chief marketing officer for Unum. "The Maine Red Claws are a great asset to the Portland area, and we are pleased to help deserving kids experience the fun and excitement of a ballgame."
Eligible groups should contact Cary Olson-Cartwright at 207-575-4478.
UNUM: Unum (www.unum.com) is one of the leading providers of employee benefits products and services in the United States and the United Kingdom. Through its subsidiaries, Unum Group provided nearly $6 billion in total benefits to customers in 2008.
MAINE RED CLAWS: 2009-10 will mark the inaugural season for the Maine Red Claws. The NBA D-League team will begin play in November at the Portland Expo Building. The franchise is owned and operated by Maine Basketball, LLC, which is principally owned by Bill Ryan Sr., the chairman of TD Banknorth Group, and Bill Ryan Jr., owner and operator of Oxford Plains Speedway. Jon Jennings, a partner in Maine Basketball, LLC and former Boston Celtics assistant coach, serves as the team's president and general manager.
NBA Development League: The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league and featured 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams during the 2008-09 season. This fall, two new NBA D-League teams will begin play in Portland, ME and Springfield, MA - the birthplace of basketball. Eighty-four former NBA Development League players were on 2008-09 NBA end-of-season rosters, amounting to almost 20 percent of NBA players, and the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front office staff for the NBA and its teams. In fostering the league's connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote health and wellness, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs. The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA. Throughout the season fans can watch all NBA D-League games on NBA Futurecast, the free live Web-streaming initiative found at nba.com/futurecast.
