D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (October 13, 2005) - On Saturday, October 15, United for D.C., the non-profit arm of D.C. United, will be host to over 300 kids, parents and chaperones at the team's âKicks for Kids East of the River Party.' Those in attendance include organizations that have previously benefited from Kicks for Kids as well as a few first-time non-profits and other community groups new to the program. Saturday's game against the Columbus Crew kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and will be shown live on Comcast SportsNet.
"We have reason to celebrate," said Catherine Marquette, United for D.C.'s Executive Director and United's Community Relations Director. "The team [D.C. United] is concluding another successful regular season game, and we want to give them a great finale as they head into the playoffs. To do this, we wanted some of our more special fans to be in attendance. We decided to host a party for this occasion, and we invited over 300 young people from East of the Anacostia River to partake in the festivities."
The âEast of the River Party' will be held at RFK Stadium's Diamond Club, beginning at 6:00 p.m., where a catered, pre-game meal will be served. Additionally, each child will receive a Kicks for Kids t-shirt and pom-pom at the event and will have the opportunity to meet United's Alecko Eskandarian, who will be on hand to meet-and-greet and sign autographs for the partygoers. Invited organizations all work with under-served youth who live East of the Anacostia River, in particular in Ward 8 and in the neighborhoods of Anacostia and Congress Heights. Organizations include DC Village Shelter, East of the River Clergy/Police, House of Ruth, Southeast DC Partners, Birney Elementary School, Parklands Community Center, Children of Mine and DC SCORES.
The party is being held in addition to the hundreds of other Kicks for Kids beneficiaries who have been invited to attend this last regular season home game. These kids and young people come from over 120 different non-profit organizations in the Greater Washington, D.C. community who attend D.C. United games through Kicks for Kids on a regular basis. Non-profit organizations may qualify to be a Kicks for Kids beneficiary as long as they serve the inner-city, at-risk or otherwise disadvantaged youth, they sign a ticket use agreement form to not sell or distribute the ticket vouchers outside of the program's parameters and they promise to do their best to ensure proper attendance.
Kicks for Kids provides the "game-day experience" for over 10,000 inner-city, at-risk or other disadvantaged youth each season. The program provides qualified non-profit organizations with access to tickets to D.C. United games free-of-charge. It is supported annually by contributions from various community-minded corporations. 2005 benefactors include The Colburn Family Foundation, AmeriGroup, Citibank, AOL, Cox Communications, GEICO, Jones Day, adidas America, Brotman Winter Fried, Miller & Long and The Screaming Eagles.
