Windsor Spitfires News Release
(Windsor, ON) - The Windsor Spitfires are proud to announce a charitable commitment from Unifor Local 444 as part of the club's MVP Program, through which the Plentiful Harvest Food Rescue Program at the Unemployed Help Centre received a donation of $1,000.
President Dino Chiodo says Unifor Local 444 is proud to support Plentiful Harvest, which connects the Unemployed Help Centre with local farmers in support of those in the community who need food.
"Plentiful Harvest, in essence, reaches out to farmers in our community to rescue food that otherwise would pass its expiration date or not make it to market." Chiodo said. "And by extension, we're able to do something good and useful with that food, by getting it into the hands of individuals who can get back on track, so they don't have to worry about where that next meal is coming from."
Unemployed Help Centre CEO June Muir says programs like Plentiful Harvest wouldn't exist without the support of partners like Unifor.
"We are fortunate to have so many programs and services today because of their ongoing support and leadership," said Muir. "Since 2012 we have rescued over seven million pounds of food through Plentiful Harvest that otherwise would have gone to waste. We have so many people that don't have access to a nutritious dinner."
Prior to the third period of this past Saturday's game versus London, Spitfires Coordinator of Fan Development Nathan Sellon presented a cheque to the Unemployed Help Centre on behalf of Unifor Local 444 and the Windsor Spitfires Foundation.
Unifor Local 444 and the Unemployed Help Centre were also recognized in a feature video presented on the WFCU Centre's Jumbotron during an intermission break.
ABOUT THE MVP PROGRAM
The Windsor Spitfires have created the MVP (Most Valuable Playmaker) Program to help businesses build a strong connection in our communities. The program combines the fun of a community ticket program with the lasting benefits of a donation of $1,000 to the local charity of the participating partners choice.
