
Undefeated Checkers continue homestand Friday

(Charlotte, NC - Tuesday, November 2) The Charlotte Checkers (4-0-0) will put their four-game, season starting winning streak on the line this weekend hosting two of the top teams in the ECHL. The Checkers will host the Trenton Titans (3-0-0) Friday night at Cricket Arena at 7:00 p.m., while the South Carolina Stingrays (3-1-1) come to town Saturday night for a 7:00 p.m. face-off time. The Checkers won both of their games last week to set a new, modern-day Charlotte record for most wins to start the season, breaking the old mark of three set by the Checkers 1996-97 team.

Friday, November 5: TRENTON @ CHARLOTTE - 7:00 p.m.
The Checkers will continue their four-game homestand Friday night at Cricket Arena hosting the Trenton Titans at 7:00 p.m. The game will feature a battle of the unbeaten as the Titans have been perfect in three starts so far this season. Trenton goalie Andrew Allen has been in goal in all three wins, sporting a 3-0-0 record, a 1.33 GAA and a .958 save percentage. Veteran forward Rick Kowalsky returns to Trenton after three seasons at Roanoke. Head Coach Mike Haviland, a former assistant with the Titans, returns to Trenton as Head Coach after three successful seasons in Atlantic City. The Checkers have not beaten the Titans since March of 2003, losing both games that were played between the two teams last season. It's a two-game season series with both games in Charlotte. Trenton is an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers.

Saturday, November 6: SOUTH CAROLINA @ CHARLOTTE - 7:00 p.m.
The Checkers will continue their four-game homestand Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. hosting the Stingrays in game # 2 of an eight-game season series with South Carolina. Charlotte owns a 1-0 lead in the season series via a 3-2 overtime win on October 23 in Charleston. The Stingrays have a new NHL affiliation this season, hooking up with the Washington Capitals. The Stingrays bring a host of veterans back for 2004-05 including goalie Kirk Daubenspeck, defenseman Trevor Johnson and forward Marty Clapton. Rookie forward Joe Tenute is a promising young player for South Carolina.

Charlotte rallied late last Friday night to beat the Inferno 3-2 in sudden-death overtime. Eddie Pershin tied the game at 2-2 with just 40 seconds left in the third period, and Ryan Cuthbert scored the game-winner just 35 seconds into the OT for the victory. Rookie goalie Kelly Guard made 27 saves to gain his first professional win.
Saturday night the Checkers jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead in their home opener against Columbia, but had to pull the game out in the final three minutes. The Inferno tied the game at 3-3 after two periods, but the Checkers out-scored Columbia 2-1 in the final period for the victory. Eddie Pershin had a goal and an assist, while Juris Stals had a pair of goals including the game-winner with 2:45 to go in the game.
CHECKERS NEWS & NOTES:
÷ Checkers went 2-0-0 last week to set a new club record for the fastest start to a season. Charlotte is 4-0-0, topping the 3-0-0 start by the 1996-97 club.
÷ Checkers goalie Alex Westlund is undefeated in three starts with a record of 3-0-0, 2.28 GAA and .908 save percentage. Westlund ¬â¢s three wins also tie
him with three others for second place on the ECHL parade for wins by a goaltender.
÷ Center Mike Harder has a four-game point streak alive with two goals, two assists for four points.
÷ Checkers winger Eddie Pershin is tied for third in the ECHL ¬â¢s scoring parade with three goals, four assists for seven points. Pershin also has a four-
game point streak and is tied for second in the ECHL in plus / minus at +6
÷ The Checkers are first in the ECHL in road wins with three.
÷ The Checkers are 5-6-1 in home openers following their 5-4 victory over the Columbia Inferno in the 2004-05 home opener last Saturday night.
