Election Night Gala and NHLer Gomez Tonight
November 2, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors return to action at Centennial Garden tonight after an eight-day layoff as they host the Alaska Aces at 7:00 p.m. for an Election Night Gala.
As it turns out, November 2nd is a big day in the United States of America for reasons unrelated to hockey, and the Condors would like to reward those who are deep in the spirit of our democratic republic. Anyone who hits the polling booths today should make sure to take an "I Voted" sticker with them as displaying it on your person will earn you a $2 discount on a ticket to tonight's match against Alaska. In addition, anyone wishing to come dressed as their favorite politician can receive 2-for-1 admission to this game only. Also, in an effort to soften the blow of defeat, the Condors would like to extend a free invitation to any of the seven candidates on the California State Presidential Ballot who do not earn the nod as the 43rd President of the United States (most of them should know by game time on the West Coast.) They are even invited to drop the first puck if they wish. KKEY-TV 11 and La Preciosa 105.3 sponsor the night.
The game also has significance on the ice, as the Aces are bringing a new acquisition with them. 1999 - 2000 National Hockey League Rookie of the Year and All-Star Scott Gomez was added by Alaska last week. He recorded three assists in three games last weekend against San Diego in the first minor league hockey games of his six-year pro career. The Alaska native won two Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils and brings nearly 400 NHL games of experience into the building. Gomez also made history by becoming the first Hispanic player to skate in the NHL. Gomez was born in Anchorage, but his father is Mexican-American and his mother is Columbian.
The Condors will also be in action on Saturday night when the San Diego Gulls come to town. That night, sponsored by KKEY-TV 11, KERN 1410 and SBC Smart Yellow Pages, three historic Condors numbers will be hung in the Garden forever. Paul Willett's #16, Steve Dowhy's #74 and Glen Mears' #26 will be retired to honor their memorable careers in Bakersfield. Everyone in attendance will receive a special poster to help commemorate the night as well.
All games, home and away, can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230 with "Condors Countdown" starting 15 minutes prior to faceoff.
