
Ulrich's Monster Day Helps Birds Take Finale

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-18) won the series finale vs. the Gary SouthShore RailCats (17-20) by a final score of 12-8. The Birds offense exploded for 17 hits in the closing game of the six-game homestand. Wyatt Ulrich accounted for five of the hits, including an eighth-inning solo home run.
Colby Wyatt (1-2) was credited with the win. He picked up his first professional victory after a 5.2 inning outing in which he allowed eight hits and four runs (four earned). He also struck out five RailCats. Jack Alkire (2-4) was credited with the loss. Alkire pitched six innings and allowed 14 hits and 11 runs (11 earned).
The Canaries led 5-4 going to the bottom of the sixth. The Birds blew the game open there with six runs. Zane Gurwitz extended the lead to 8-4 with a three-run blast. The home run was his third of the six-game homestand. Cade Gotta knocked a two-run homer shortly thereafter. His home run was his first in a Birds uniform.
Ulrich was five-for-five at the plate and was able to send his first pro home run out of the park in the eighth. He scored four times and recorded two RBI. His five hits were a career-high and matched the high number for a Canaries batter this season. Jabari Henry had three hits, two runs and two RBI. Robbie Gordon recorded a scoreless, hitless ninth in relief.
The Canaries enjoy an offense before traveling to Kansas City to meet the Monarchs on Tuesday to start a six-game road trip that will also include a three-game series in Cleburne, Texas. Starters for game one in Kansas City are TBA.
