Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
FRANKLIN, Wisc. - The Sioux Falls Canaries fell in the series finale 5-1 Thursday at Franklin Field. A ninth inning double helped outfielder Wyatt Ulrich extend his on-base streak to 49 straight games. The Canaries head to Geneva, Illinois for a three-game set starting Friday at 6:30 pm.
Ulrich picked up the only Canaries RBI of the game with a double down the left field line to score Nick Gotta in the top of the ninth. Ulrich went 1-for-5 on the night and is now within seven games of the all-time American Association record of 56 straight games on-base, which was set by Stephen Dougles (El Paso/Grand Prairie) in 2011.
Blake Svoboda (0-1) suffered the loss in his professional debut. The Mount Marty alum went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and five runs (five earned). Veteran Ryan Zimmerman (6-4) earned the win for the Milkmen. He struck out nine while allowing just three hits in six shutout innings.
Angelo Altavilla finished with a single and a double. He racked up five hits in the final two games of the series. The Canaries played most of the game without center fielder Cade Gotta, who was ejected in the first after a controversial check swing third strike call.
The Milkmen (43-21) were led by David Washington, who piled up a home run, a double and three RBI.
The Canaries (24-40) will head to Northwestern Medicine Field for the weekend to battle the Kane County Cougars (30-35). The squads start the series Friday at 6:30. RHP Tyler Garkow (2-7, 6.52 ERA) will start for the Birds. The Kane County starter is TBA.
A live broadcast of all away games will be available via Fox Sports 98.1 FM and American Association Baseball TV. The Canaries will be back home August 10th at 7:05 pm to take on the Cleburne Railroaders.
