U.S. National Team News Release
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Despite putting 28 shots on net, Austin Czarnik's (Washington, Mich.) tip in was the only one that got through for the U.S. National Under-18 Team as it fell to the Green Bay Gamblers, 3-1, here tonight at the Resch Center.
Reed Seckel's shorthanded goal at 12:50 of the opening stanza put Green Bay ahead 1-0. Just 2:15 later, Alex Kubiak converted on a feed from Scott Czarnowczan to double the Gambler lead on the power play.
Czarnik cut Team USA's deficit to one goal 6:09 into the middle period when he tipped Frankie Simonelli's (Bensenville, Ill.) right-point shot past Steve Summerhays. Netminder Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the frame to keep the U.S. within striking distance after 40 minutes.
The U.S. defense held the Gamblers to just five shots on goal in the final stanza, while the offense put 11 shots on Summerhays without success. David Makowski's empty-net marker with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation iced the 3-1 victory for Green Bay.
Campbell made 24 stops on the night.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team will take on No. 4 University of Wisconsin at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CST.
