
U.S. Nat'l U17 Team Tops Marquette in Shootout, 3-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.), who made 31 saves in regulations, stopped two shots in a shootout to help the U.S. National Under-17 Team earn a 3-2 decision over the Marquette Rangers here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
After a scoreless first period, Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) gave Team USA a 1-0 lead 9:14 into the second stanza when he grabbed a rebound off a shot by Adam Clendening (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and put it past netminder Matt Brooker for a power-play goal. Stuart Higgins (Troy, Mich.) extended the lead to 2-0 at 17:59 in the second period when he won a faceoff and fired a shot through Brooker.
In the third frame, Marquette cut the deficit to one when Dalimir Jancovic scored off of a rebound on the right side at 11:50. Marquette tied the game, 2-2, when Josh Bussell took Jancovic's feed and snapped the puck past Campbell at 16:21.
Following a scoreless overtime, the game was decided in a shootout. Nieto scored five-hole on Team USA's first attempt. Campbell followed with a leg-pad save on Bussell. Next, Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) scored with a quick wrist shot into the upper right hand corner, while Jancovic's shot went wide on the ensuing attempt. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) added Team USA's third shootout goal after he deked to the right and put the puck past Brooker. Campbell robbed James Gallagher with a glove save to seal the 3-2 win for Team USA.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to action on Friday (October 24) when it heads to Youngstown, Ohio, for a weekend series against the Mahoning Valley Phantoms at the Chevy Centre. Team USA will also play the Phantoms on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. ET.
