
U.S.A. battles Slovakia to tie at World Championships

Team U.S.A. battled Slovakia to a 3-3 tie on Monday at the International Ice Hockey Federation's 2004 World Championships. The tournament is being played from April 24 through May 9 in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic. Four former P-Bruins are with Team U.S.A., including head coach Peter Laviolette, left wing Andy Hilbert and defensemen Hal Gill and Jeff Jillson. A total of 11 former P-Bruins are playing in the tournament, for the U.S., Canada, Finland, Slovakia and Latvia.
Gill had an assist in the game, while Hilbert and Jillson were held off the scoreboard. The U.S. goals were scored by Richard Park, Erik Westrum and Ryan Malone. Goaltender Ty Conklin made 33 saves in the deadlock. Former P-Bruin Jozef Stumpel was held off the scoreboard for Slovakia.
Other former P-Bruins in action on Monday included all-time scoring leader Sergei Zholtok, who scored Latvia's only goal in a 1-1 tie with Germany. Grigori Panteleev and Aigar Cipruss also played in the game for Latvia.
Antti Laaksonen was in the lineup for Finland in his team's 5-1 win over the Ukraine. The Czech Republic, with Boston Bruin defenseman Jiri Slegr in the lineup, defeated Kazakhstan, 7-0.
Team U.S.A. is in Group B, along with Finland, Slovakia and the Ukraine. The U.S. is now 0-1-1 in the tournament. The Stars and Stripes concludes the Preliminary Round on Wednesday against the Ukraine. The Qualifying and Relegation Rounds run from April 30 â May 4. The Final Round will be played from May 5 â May 9.
