MANCHESTER, NH â The Manchester Monarchs, the top affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, not only led the American Hockey League in attendance during the 2003-04 season, they also finished with the top attendance average in all of North American minor pro hockey, outdrawing 97 other teams. According to the "In The Crease" Web site, the Monarchs ended the Oklahoma City Blazers' three-year run as attendance champions with an average of 9,141 fans per game. The Blazers, members of the Central Hockey League, averaged 8,764 fans in 2003-04. A complete listing of North American minor pro hockey attendance in 2003-04 is available at www.inthecrease.com.
The Monarchs, who also led the AHL with an average of 8,986 fans in 2002-03, increased their average attendance by over 150 fans per game in 2003-04. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins finished second to the Monarchs in AHL attendance with an average of 8,298 fans per game in 2003-04.
"The numbers support what we already knew," said Monarchs president Jeff Eisenberg. "We have loyal fans that care about our team. Their support is tremendous. Tim Bechert and the SMG management group also deserve a lot of credit for making the Verizon Wireless Arena one of the best buildings in all of hockey."
Monarchs Attendance Highlights:
A team record 365,636 fans watched Monarchs hockey at the Verizon Wireless Arena in 2003-04.
The Monarchs averaged a team record 9,141 fans per game at the Verizon Wireless Arena in 2003-04.
The Monarchs sold out 19 of their 40 home games at the Verizon Wireless Arena in 2003-04.
2003-04 sell out nights included Mullet Night, 70's Night, New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Night and Ryan Flinn Bobblehead Night.
The Monarchs celebrated their millionth fan, 41-year-old Mike Coons, on March 10, 2004.
The Monarchs topped the AHL's attendance average (5,595) by 3,545 fans per game in 2003-04.
The Monarchs accounted for 5.8 percent of the AHL's overall attendance in 2003-04.
