Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants in conjunction with the Western Hockey League are thrilled to announce that 1997-born forward Ty Ronning (Burnaby, B.C.) has been named the Western Hockey League's Humanitarian of the Year. Earlier today in Red Deer, AB Ronning received the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy at the WHL Awards Banquet. He is the first Vancouver Giant to capture this award and the 10th Vancouver Giant to ever receive a league award.

"It's a huge honor to receive this award and to be recognized for all of the positive things that the Vancouver Giants have done in the community over the years," said Ty Ronning. "Receiving this award is right up there for me with being drafted to the NHL. I've always tried to be the best person I could possibly be and whether it was signing an autograph, visiting classrooms and hospitals or just having a good conversation with our fans - To be nominated and to have receive this award is awesome."

Whether it was volunteering his time to assist with Vancouver Giants Hockey School, their Read to Succeed initiative, or being the last Vancouver Giant off the ice after a Family Day Skate because he wanted to make sure that no kid missed their chance for a photo or an autograph - There are countless 'little' examples of how Ty Ronning has positively impacted his community. Ronning has personally, on his own time, spoken with students at Our Lady of Sorrows School and St. Helens Elementary School about "Never giving up" and working hard towards achieving their goals. Once this season, Ty received some fan mail from a young kid in Burnaby, B.C. and rather than responding with a letter or an autograph, Ty personally delivered a Giants jacket to the house. Over the course of the season, the Giants received ample emails from fans outlining the great things the players did to make a difference, and many of them pertained to Ty.

On the ice, the signed prospect of the New York Rangers re-wrote the history books for the Vancouver Giants during the 2017-18 season. Ronning set a new single season franchise record with 61 goals scored, making him the first ever Giant to surpass the 50 and 60-goal mark. Between October 28th and November 22nd, 2017 Ronning matched a season-high 11-game goal scoring streak. He finished first in Giants scoring with 84 points and was named a Co-MVP of the 2017-18 campaign. Ronning's 127 career goals rank him second all-time in Giants history and his 218 points rank him fourth.
