October 15, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks got a hat trick from Ty Rattie Friday as they knocked off the Kamloops Blazers 8-6 in a high-scoring road victory.
Rattie's hat trick was the first of the season by a Winterhawk, and with four total points on the night Rattie leads the team and moved into third in league scoring with 17 points on the season. He has a four-game scoring streak, with nine points in that span.
Not to be outdone, his linemate Sven Bartschi had three points on the night with a goal and two assists, and with 14 points on the season has moved into the top-10 in league scoring, and leads all WHL rookies. Bartschi joins Rattie with points in four straight games, totaling eight points in that span.
The Blazers opened the scoring 3:21 into the game when Jordan DePape beat Portland netminder Ian Curtis, making his second start of the season. The Winterhawks evened the score at the 9:10 mark on rookie Brendan Leipsic's third goal of the season to make it 1-1, a score that would last through the end of the period.
From there the two teams exploded for six combined goals in the second period. The Winterhawks did damage first, scoring three goals in a span of just 2:59, with two goals by Rattie, one of which coming on a power play, and one from Spencer Bennett, to take a 4-1 lead.
However, Kamloops answered back with three goals of their own later in the period, with tallies from JT Barnett, Brendan Ranford and Chase Schaber, as they evened the score at 4-4 heading into the third period.
Once again Portland struck early, as Rattie completed the hat trick just 1:47 into the third period to give the Winterhawks a 5-4 lead. Just over two minutes later, Leipsic notched his second goal of the night to extend the lead to 6-4.
But the Blazers kept pressing, and at the 14:46 mark Ranford scored his second of the night, a shorthanded goal, to cut Portland's lead to 6-5. But a short time later on the same penalty, the Winterhawks got a power play goal from Bartschi to again go up by two, 7-5.
Again though, Kamloops fought back, as with 34.8 seconds left the Blazers got a goal from Dalibor Bortnak to again cut the Portland lead to just one, 7-6. But with the Blazers' net empty for an extra attacker, the Winterhawks sealed the game when Riley Boychuk scored with just over a second remaining to give Portland an 8-6 win.
The team returns to the ice tomorrow in Kelowna to take on the Rockets. That game can be heard live at 7 p.m. on Freedom 970. The Winterhawks return home to host the Everett Silvertips Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
