Two Yankees officials involved in fatal car accident

New York Yankees minor league manager Oscar Acosta and team official Humberto Trejo were killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic, according to the Associated Press.

Acosta, who was set to begin his third season as the manager of the Gulf Coast League Yankees, and Trejo, the field coordinator of the Yankees' Dominican Program, were killed in an accident on a highway outside of Santo Domingo Wednesday night.

"This is a tragic loss for the families of these men and for the Yankees organization," said RiverDogs manager Bill Mosiello.

Acosta, 49, was set to begin his third season as the manager of the Gulf Coast Yankees. He led the GCL Yankees to back-to-back league championships in his first two seasons as manager. Acosta had also previously served as the pitching coach for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate in Columbus (OH) from 1996-98.

More than half of the current RiverDogs roster played for Acosta, including pitcher Jason Stephens.

"Oscar was a hard-nosed guy, but I know that everything he did was for the good of the players," said Stephens. "I learned a lot from him."

RiverDogs hitting coach Torre Tyson worked as Acosta's hitting coach for the GCL Yankees during the 2004 season.

"In my nine years of professional baseball, Oscar is one people I respected most," Tyson said. "I admired the way he treated every player the same, from top draft selections to free agent signings."

Acosta had Major League coaching experience with the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. As a player Acosta pitched in the Philadelphia Phillies organization before beginning his coaching career.

Trejo, 38, was in his 16th season working for the Yankees. He served in a number of positions including as a manager, coach and coordinator of the team's Latin America player-development program. Trejo played professionally in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
