Two Unearned Runs the Difference in 4-2 Boulders Win

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Mike Gedman pitched seven innings, allowing only two earned runs, but the two unearned Rockland Boulders runs were the difference in the Worcester Tornadoes' 4-2 defeat at Provident Bank Park Thursday night.

Gedman's fourth start of the season lasted 102 pitches, but a pair of runs from the fourth from his own throwing error gave the Boulders a lead they would never relinquish.

Johnny Welch hit a two-run homer in the first inning, scoring Brandon Pinckney in front of him to give the Tornadoes a short-lived lead.

Half of a frame later, Rockland tied the game. Chris Valencia led a double steal with Qualon Millender, then scored on a Keith Brachold groundout. Millender touched home plate to tie the game on an RBI single by Ryan Scoma.

The other two runs for the home team happened after Gedman overthrew the first baseman Alex Nunez on a bunt attempt, allowing Ryan Mollica-- who had singled on the first pitch of the inning-- to take third. Jose Reyes, the hitter who laid down the bunt, reached second. Valencia knocked Mollica in with a sacrifice fly to center field before Reyes scored on a wild pitch.

Bobby Blevins struck out four hitters, walked two and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits in the win. He retired the Tornadoes in order twice and recorded at least two outs before a batter reached base in six of his seven innings. Mike Samela was the only Worcester hitter to buck that trend, reaching on an error with one down in the seventh.

Julio Santana and Adrian Martin combined for two scoreless innings of relief, neither allowing a baserunner.

Mike Mullen pitched a perfect eighth out of the pen for Worcester.

Game two of the series is Friday night at 7:05pm, with Nick Gagalis taking you through all of the action live on USTREAM.tv.
