Go-Ahead Homer By "rhode" Team Sinks Jackals 5-3

New Jersey Jackals News Release

The Jackals saw their four-game win streak come to an end on a cool, Thursday night in Little Falls, as the visiting Gary SouthShore RailCats took game one 8-3. A two-run, go-ahead blast off the bat of RailCats' first baseman Mike Rohde in the top of the eighth inning put the RailCats up 5-3.

Kyle Greenwalt got the start for the hometown Jackals, going eight innings for the second time this season. He allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out five. Greenwalt suffers his second loss of the season and drops to 3-2.

The visiting RailCats sent converted reliever Will Krout to the mound. The crafty righty's off-speed pitches baffled Jackals hitters over seven-and-two-third innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits to earn his first win of the season. He improves to 1-3.

The Gary SouthShore side had hit only 20 home runs prior to today, but smacked two, two-out dingers to right field. After Rohde's go-ahead homer in the eighth, Mike Massaro hit a three-run round-tripper off New Jersey's Jimmer Kennedy in the ninth.

Adam Klein also had a big day for the RailCats. He tripled and scored three runs. Brian Kolb, Ryan Babineau, and Massaro chipped in with RBIs.

Although leading the Can-Am League with 75 home runs this season, it was the Jackals who turned to a small-ball style of play tonight. Bryan Sabatella led the way for New Jersey with a two-run triple in the third inning. He then scored the team's third run of the day on a wild pitch. The Jackals also had four stolen bases on the day, two coming via the red-hot outfielder Chris Curran.

Curran was 2-5 today and has recorded a multi-base hit game in five straight.

Carlos Guzman was 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

For Jackals' manager Joe Calfapietra, drops his first game against his former squad. Calfapietra won Northern League Coach of the Year as manager of the RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002.

With the loss, the Jackals fall to 33-25 on the season. Coupled with a Quebec victory tonight, they are now six games out of first place. The RailCats move to 26-33. They are now 5-3 on their East Coast road trip.

The four-game set between these two sides continues tomorrow when Jackals' right-hander Steve Fox (8-1, 2.41) takes the mound in search of his Can-Am League leading ninth victory. Fellow righty Stephen Hiscock (2-4, 2.46) returns from the disabled list to start for the RailCats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The pregame show starts 10 minutes prior.
