Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - All 12 runs in Wednesday night's contest at Banner Island Ballpark scored with two outs in the inning. Unfortunately for the Stockton Ports, 10 of the 12 runs were scored by the Modesto Nuts. Modesto handed Stockton its fifth consecutive series loss as the Nuts defeated the Ports by a final of 10-2, their fifth straight win over Stockton.
Modesto got off to a fast start in the top of the first when Gareth Morgan came up with two on and two out and hit a three-run homer-his first of two on the night--off Ports starter Evan Manarino (3-5) that gave the Nuts an early 3-0 lead.
Stockton got a run back in the first inning when, with two outs and the bases empty Chase Calabuig doubled and Greg Deichmann followed with an RBI single to left to make it 3-1. The Ports pulled to within a run in the third. With one on and two out, Nuts starter Darren McCaughan issued three consecutive walks, the last one issued to Luke Persico with the bases loaded to make it a 3-2 contest.
The Nuts would go on to score the final seven runs of the game beginning in the fourth. With one on and two out, Louis Boyd doubled to the right field wall to make it 4-2. Anthony Jimenez followed with a two-run homer to run the Modesto lead to 6-2.
Manarino would pitch into the fifth inning and, after retiring the first two batters, issued back-to-back walks followed by a two-run double hit by Luis Liberato to make it 8-2 and knock Manarino from the contest. Brendan Butler took over and gave up an RBI single to Manny Pazos that ballooned the Nuts lead to 9-2.
Manarino would suffer the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing a career-high nine runs on nine hits while matching a career-high with three walks issued.
McCaughan would work into the fifth inning for Modesto but give up back-to-back two-out singles, causing him to be lifted for Danny Garcia (1-5) who would go on to work two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings in picking up his first win of the season. McCaughan allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out six over four-and-two-thirds frames.
The Nuts capped the scoring in the seventh when Morgan hit his second home run of the contest, a solo blast off Butler that made it a 10-2 score. It was the only run allowed by Butler in 3.1 innings of work.
The Ports and Nuts wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Matt Milburn (6-4, 3.59 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Austin Hutchison (1-2, 4.60 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
