Two-Out Homers Put Power Down

Salisbury, MD - The West Virginia Power had the lead twice in Tuesday's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds, but Delmarva erased a pair of one-run deficits and homered twice with two outs in the seventh inning to defeat the Power 5-3.

West Virginia took the lead in the top of the second on Kurt Crowell's first of two RBI singles on the afternoon. In the bottom of the inning Kieron Pope reached on an error to bring in the tying run. The Shorebirds took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third on Joe Mahoney's sacrifice fly that plated Matt Angle.

Jonathan Lucroy began the fourth inning with a double and he scored on Zelous Wheeler's second double of the game. Tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Kurt Crowell ripped a single into left field to score Steffan Wilson. In the bottom of the seventh Anthony Martinez homered with two outs to tie the game. Wally Crancer walked on four pitches before Kieron Pope hit a two-run shot to put Delmarva ahead for good.

Brian Parker (5-0) allowed a run on two hits over an inning and two-thirds of relief. Corey Frerichs (0-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over an inning and two-thirds. Mick Mattaliano (7) got the save while holding the Power scoreless through an inning and a third. Roque Mercedes held the Shorebirds to two runs on seven hits over five innings.

The Power fell to 12-20 with the loss and the Shorebirds improved to 18-14 with the win. Three Power players had multi-hit games including Kurt Crowell who paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance. Lucroy and Wheeler chipped in with two hits a piece. Delmarva manager Ramon Sambo and second baseman Ryan Adams were both ejected in the bottom of the second for arguing balls and strikes.

The Power are off on Wednesday but will begin a four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Right-Hander Evan Anundsen (2-3, 4.45) will get the start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Jeff Mandel (2-1, 4.88). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
