Late Inning Meltdown Burns Drive, Lose 11-5 to Catfish

Greenville, SC - Making his first start in almost two weeks, Felix Doubront showed no ill-effects from a nagging groin injury as he tossed 5.0 strong innings Tuesday night. It was all for naught, however, as the bullpen blew a two-run lead and the Catfish (14-18) poured it on for an 11-4 victory in the series finale.

Doubront looked poised to improve on his perfect 4-0 start to the season, as he tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. A pair of Catfish runs in the top of the third was the only blemishes on the southpaw's line.

Down two games to one in the four-game set, the Catfish made sure they would get out of Greenville with a series split as they scored nine runs in the final four innings. In the sixth, Mike McCormick and Henry Wrigley delivered RBIs to tie the game.

An inning later, Greg Sexton delivered the back breaker in the form of a grand slam off Ryan Colvin (1-2). Columbus plated three more runs in the ninth with RBI-doubles off the bats of Reid Fronk and McCormick.

The Drive (18-15) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as Ryan Kalish smacked a solo homer, his first of the year. After falling behind 2-1, Greenville regained their lead in the bottom of the third as Che-Hsuan Lin belted a three-run roundtripper.

Despite the loss, Mike Jones continued his torrid 2008 season, finishing the game 2-for-5 to extend his franchise record hitting streak to 27 games.

Although he turned in a less than stellar performance on the mound, allowing four runs and six hits in 6.0 innings, Catfish starter Alex Cobb (5-2) lasted long enough to earn the victory.

The Drive will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow as they begin a four-game series with the Southern Division basement dwellers, the Rome Braves. Right-hander Eammon Portice will toe the rubber for Greenville as Rome counters with lefty Scott Diamond.

First pitch for tomorrow's series opener is 12:05 PM as Heroes Week continues with Sports Heroes Day.
