Adelanto, CA. - Late power beat the nuts in their 8-5 loss to the Mavericks on Saturday night at Heritage Field.
Jordy Lara clubbed a go-ahead, two-run homer for the Mavs (6-4, 40-40) against Nuts (4-6, 27-53) reliever Shane Broyles. Travis Witherspoon added a solo home run in the eighth off Peter Tago to help secure the Mavs win.
In the sixth, the Nuts tied the game thanks to Mike Tauchman's inside-the-park, two-run home run. Tauchman hit a slicing liner down the left field line. Mavs leftfielder Burt Reynolds slammed into the fence trying to make the catch. As he was slow to get up, Tauchman was able to race around the bases for his first pro home run.
Lefty Ryan Carpenter (L, 2-4) started for the Nuts and worked 6.2 innings allowing six runs on four hits while striking out a season-high-tying five batters.
Grady Wood (W, 2-3) tossed four innings out of the 'pen for the Mavs. The righty allowed two runs while striking out three and walking none.
Derek Jones added a two-run single for the Nuts in the second inning.
The finale of the four-game series against the Mavs will have Devin Burke on the mound. The Mavs will send lefty Scott DeCecco to the center bump. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 5:00 p.m.
