Two Grand Slams Cap Keene Offensive Surge, Defeat Plymouth 14-2
July 8, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release
Keene continued their recent offensive surge, jumping all over Plymouth's pitching, scoring a season high 14 runs.
Two grand slams capped the scoring for Keene. The first one came in the sixth inning from Texas Tech's Eric Gutierrez, who launched his first home run of the season over the center field wall.
The second slam came by Zach Lucas, out of Louisville, who drove in five runs on the night, to push the lead to 14-2.
The game started off in a much different way though, as things could have been much worse for the Swamp Bats.
Keene's starter out of Mercyhurst, Tanner Delahoy, recorded just two outs in the first inning, before being pulled for Matthew Clancy, with two runs already in and the bases loaded and two outs. Clancy, the St. John's product, stuck out Ryan Richardson to end the threat, and that would be all the scoring that Plymouth would mount.
Clancy went another five innings, picking up the win by keeping the Pilgrims scoreless. The win moves him to 3-0 on the season.
Daniel Nichols, University of Georgia, put the first run on the board for Keene with an opposite field solo shot, his second of second of the season.
Lucas tied the game in the fifth with and RBI single and after that, the grand slams led the rest of the way.
With fog continuing to increase throughout the latter innings, the game was called after the end of the seventh, with the score at 14-2 Keene.
The win is the third straight for the Swamp Bats (8-12) and the fifth in sixth games this past week.
Keene will be back on the road on Tuesday night, where the team will travel to Holyoke to take on the Blue Sox. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
