New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
It was a game of two halves Monday night at Cardines Field as the New Bedford Bay Sox fell to the Newport Gulls 5-4.
Newport scored all five runs in the first three innings off of five hits and three Bay Sox errors.
The Bay Sox battled back and had the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth but couldn't complete the comeback.
Carl Anderson (Bryant) continued to swing a hot bat for the Bay Sox going 2-for-4 with a run and Shea Pierce (Sam Houston St.) and Matt Lopez (San Jose St.) both had 2 RBIs.
Steve Anderson (Georgetown) led the way for the Gulls going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Shea Donlin (Washington St.) and Ben Roberts (Washington St.) both had two hits as well.
Mick Van Vossen (Michigan St.) got the win allowing 4 runs on 6 hits.
Frank Vilacha (New Haven) took the loss after 6 innings of work. He allowed 8 hits, 5 runs, 2 earned, walked 2 and struck out 4.
The Gulls jumped out of the gate early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Trace Tam Sing (Washington St.) got Newport going with a single down the left field line. Roberts reached on a fielding error by Chris Shaw (Boston College), and Anderson brought both of them home with a 2-run double off the right field wall.
Newport added two more runs in the second inning to make it 4-0.
Vilacha hit the first two batters of the inning and gave up a single to David Graybill (Arizona State University) to load the bases. With no outs, Vilacha got a groundball to Pierce at second base but he threw it into the outfield trying to turn the double play and two runs scored.
The Bay Sox bats awoke in the top of the third.
Christian Venditti (Georgetown) started things off with a single up the middle. Anderson followed that up with a double to put runners on second and third, and Pierce cleared the bases with a double off the right field wall to make it 4-2.
The Gulls kept rolling in the bottom of the third as they added another run when Donlin singled to right field.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Bay Sox made it a 1-run deficit when Lopez hit a 2-RBI double that scored Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) and Pierce.
New Bedford had the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third with one out in the top of the 8th but failed to bring them home.
With the loss the Bay Sox fall to 8-15 on the season. Their next game is against Team Canada Tuesday night at 6:30 PM at Paul Walsh Field.
