Two Cubs Named to FSL Post-Season All-Star Team

September 2, 2009 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

The Florida State League All-Star Team for 2009 was announced by League President Chuck Murphy and Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro, along with catcher Robinson Chirinos were among the 18 players named. The team was selected by Field Managers, Official Scorers, and club Sports Writers representing the twelve teams in the league.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was also named to the Mid-Season All-Star team and stole the show down in Fort Myers. The 19-year old went 4-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run to pick up the Most Valuable Player Award at the midsummer classic.

Castro began the season in Daytona with hits in his first five plate appearances and never slowed down. The Dominican Republic-native is currently third in the Florida State League in batting average with a .302 mark. He was promoted to Double-A Tennessee on August 4th.

Robinson Chirinos was also named to the Mid-Season FSL All-Star team. The Venezuelan was a stalwart behind the plate for Daytona, but did his best work with the bat. Chirinos led the team with eleven home runs and hit four of them during a two-day stretch versus the Sarasota Reds.

In the first of those two games, Chirinos made history as both dingers came with the bases loaded. It is only the second time in the history of the Florida State League that a single player has hit two grand slams in one game. The Cubs catcher was also promoted to Double-A Tennessee on August 4th.

The Daytona Cubs wrap up the 2009 season on the road with three games versus the Lakeland Flying Tigers beginning Tuesday, September 1, and then three more at Bright House Field against the Clearwater Threshers.
