Two Canaries Heading To All-Star Game
July 9, 2004 - Northern League (NL)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
(SIOUX FALLS, SD) â Players are often told that if they go out on the field everyday, play to their best ability, and play the game the right way, then they will be noticed by their peers as well as anyone else watching. The saying proved to be true for two members of the Sioux Falls Canaries, shortstop Marc Mirizzi and starting pitcher Wes Faust. Both players were selected to play in the 2004 Northern League All-Star Game on July 20 in Joliet Ill., Mirizzi voted in as a starter and Faust picked by the North Division's manager Doug Siminuc.
Mirizzi, who has played in all 45 games for Sioux Falls this season, is batting .311 with 4 homeruns and 37 RBI. He was among the league leaders in batting average for most of the first six weeks of the season, helping hold the Canaries together when the team was missing a couple of their veterans.
Faust, who was selected by Simunic to be one of the pitchers for the North Division, has been the most consistent pitcher for the Canaries this season. He has worked the sixth inning in seven of his nine starts, and into the eighth inning in three starts. Opponents are batting just .204 off of him, while he has compiled a 4-1 record with a 3.04 ERA.
The Sioux Falls Canaries also announced Friday that they placed catcher Josh Allan on the Inactive List, and signed catcher Zack Riggan to take his spot on the roster. Allan had to leave the team for personal reasons.
The Sioux Falls Canaries will host Opening Day at the Birdcage on Monday, July 12 when the Birds host the Kansas City T-Bones to kick off the second half of the season. There will be Opening Day festivities, special menu items in the barbeque, and a chance to win a limousine for six, plus dinner for six at the Timber Lodge.
For tickets stop by the Canaries ticket office or call 605-333-0179.
