North Shore Spirit News Release
With timely hitting from the offensive and shutdown performances from their starters, the Spirit swept a doubleheader with the Worcester Tornadoes on Saturday night winning the first game, 4-0 and taking game two, 6-1, while extending their winning streak to seven games.
A sellout crowd of 4,011 was in attendance for the festivities and the Spirit did not disappoint their fans in either end of the doubleheader.
The Spirit offense was on the attack in the nightcap, staking Morse to the early lead with a second-inning score. Chris Rowan doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a rare infield single chopped over the third baseman's head from Jeff Brooks.
The Spirit added to their advantage in the third, capitalizing on a couple of solo home runs. B.J. Weed made his return to the Spirit lineup and immediately made his presence felt with a home run in his first at bat. Two batters later Rob Fischer followed suit with his third homer of the season to put the Spirit ahead, 3-0.
The Spirit tacked on two more in the fourth, once again doing damage with the long ball. Jeff Brooks got things going with a one-out double and scored on Alex Trezza's league-leading 16th home run of the season. Newcomer Antoin Gray followed with an infield singe, and scored the sixth Spirit run on a base hit RBI from Luis Sabino.
Worcester broke up Morse' shutout attempt with two out in the final frame, capitalizing on an error from right fielder Luis Sabino to push their only run of the night across the plate. It wouldn't matter, however, as Morse notched a game-ending strikeout to seal the Spirit victory.
Morse pitched a complete game, allowing just one unearned run to earn his league-leading 11th win of the season. Reid Willett (4-4) took the loss for the Tornadoes.
The first game was all North Shore, as Worcester had no answer for Spirit starter Shaun McNamara (4-0). The rookie pitcher out of Brown shut down the Tornadoes attack in a complete-game effort.
The Spirit took control of the contest with a three-run third inning. Vic Davilla and Chris Rowan reached on back-to-back singles and Davilla came around to score the first Spirit run on an RBI base hit from Ricardo Cordova. Jeff Brooks followed with a two-run double to put the Spirit ahead, 3-0.
North Shore tacked on another run during the next inning on a leadoff homerun from Jon de Vries. The long ball to straightaway center was the second on the season for de Vries and it closed out the scoring in the game.
McNamara was magnificent on the Spirit mound, facing just one batter over the minimum to earn the shutout win. He scattered just two hits while striking out seven and walking none. Worcester starter Matt Weagle left the game with an injury after just one batter. Matt Meagher (1-5) suffered the loss in 3.2 innings of relief.
The Spirit and Tornadoes will be back in action tomorrow at Fraser Field. Game time is set for 2:05 p.m.
