Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (July 17, 2009) - The Brockton Rox extended its franchise record win streak to 12 games on Friday night in Nashua, NH, defeating the American Defenders of New Hampshire 8-5. DH Palmer Karr hit a three-run home run to start a six-run sixth inning in a comeback win for Brockton.
With one out in the sixth inning and trailing 2-0, Brockton's CF Chris Valencia was hit by a pitch. 1B Clyde Williams then singled to bring Karr to the plate. Karr launched a 2-2 pitch from New Hampshire starter RHP Lucas Ledbetter off the scoreboard in left field to put the Rox up 3-2. Three batters later, 2B Melvin Falu drove a two-run homer to left to push the lead to 5-2. It was the second time in the series that Karr and Falu had homered in the same inning. Brockton tacked on an additional run on an error in the inning to lead 6-2.
RHP Freddy Flores was the beneficiary of the half dozen runs in the sixth inning, but was spectacular in pressure spots early to keep the game close. The Defenders picked up each of their first two runs on sacrifice fly outs in the first three innings. However, they loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Flores got back-to-back pop ups to end the threat. In the fifth, the first two batters reached, and a stolen base put runners at second and third base with nobody out. Again, Flores did not allow a run to score, getting a strikeout, a foul out, and a ground out.
LF Keith Brachold added some insurance in the seventh inning with a two-run double to score Valencia and Williams.
Brockton's LHP Brad Hertzler had his 13.1 scoreless innings streak broken by a two-run home run by 3B Chris Kelly in the bottom of the seventh inning which accounted for the game's final runs.
RHP Jerry Dunn earned his second save in as many nights and his 10th of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Rox will look for it's third consecutive series sweep on Saturday as the first half of the 2009 season comes to a close. Brockton will send LHP Craig Anderson (5-2, 2.58 ERA) out to face New Hampshire's RHP Luis Valdez (0-3, 5.32 ERA).
