PENNELL DOES IT ALL; WORCESTER WINS
WORCESTER, MA--- Former David Prouty Panther Vinny Pennell smacked his first homer of the 2009 season, followed shortly after by Carlos Sosa's sixth to propel Worcester to a 4-3 win on Fireworks Friday at Hanover Insurance Park.
Zack Zuercher (2-4) grabbed his first win since June the fifth with six plus strong innings of five hit baseball. Three runs crossed the plate on his watch, two of them earned, before passing the ball on to Eddie Pena who did work. Pena sniffed out a double steal with one out, stepping toward third getting Ryan Rogowski hung up between second and third. He was ultimately tagged out for out number two; although he did successfully steal two bases on the evening to raise his league-leading total to eighteen. The next batter Mike DeJesus lined a single to left, and NJ third base coach Ed Ott sent runner Quinn Stewart homeward. Mistake. Vinny Pennell, up for the challenge defensively this time, came up throwing and hosed Stewart at home preserving the lead.
Jersey starter Ted Serro dropped his record to 5-3 with the loss, but pitched well. He struck out seven and walked just one over, but the two homeruns in the fourth were too much to bear for the Jackal offense.
Santiago Ramirez notched his fourth save in six chances, working around a walk and stolen base by Ryan Rogowski.
Worcester will look to take the series tomorrow at 7:05 by sending Matt Weagle (1-4) to the bump against the league leader in strikeouts (44) Isaac Pavlik (5-1). First pitch at 7:05 on Boy Scout Night, campers will be sleeping on the HIP outfield following the game.
