Week In Review: The Oilers earned just a single point in three games last week and have now gone winless in five straight contests. Tuesday night at the BOK Center, the Wichita Thunder tied up the game in the final minute of regulation and went on to claim a 3-2 shootout victory over the Oilers. Thunder goalie David Brown made 33 saves and stopped all five of Tulsa's shootout attempts. The Oilers began a home-and-home series against Missouri on Friday night and fell behind the Mavericks early in the first period. Tulsa was only able to squeeze one of its 32 shots past Mavs' goalie Shane Owen on the way to a 3-1 loss. The Oilers remained winless against the Mavericks after a 5-3 loss at the Independence Events Center on Saturday. Adam Pleskach scored twice for the Oilers and recorded his sixth multi-goal game of the season as the Oilers fell to 0-7-0 this season against Missouri.
Trending Down: With only five wins in the last 18 games, the Oilers have slipped into seventh place in the CHL standings. Tulsa is two games below .500 (19-21-3) for the first time since November 12 and has surrendered an average of 4.4 goals per game over its last five outings.
Sidelined Center: Todd Robinson suffered an undisclosed injury on Friday night against Missouri and did not play in the Oilers 5-3 loss to the Mavericks on Saturday night. The 35-year old was out of the lineup for the first time this season and has been placed on the 7-day IR.
Few and Far Between: The Oilers participated in a shootout last Tuesday for the first time in nearly two months. Tulsa had not been forced into the tie-breaking scenario since November 27 at St. Charles. The Oilers are 2-3 in shootouts this season and Ben Gordon has been the most consistent scorer with goals in three of his six attempts.
Streaking and Climbing: Veteran winger Michel Beausoleil extended his point streak to eight games on Saturday night with an assist on Drew Fisher's third period goal. Beausoleil, tied for the team lead with 24 goals, has posted six goals and six assists during his current streak. Saturday's assist pushed Beausoleil into a tie with Taylor Hall and Craig Coxe for sixth place on the Oilers all-time assist list with 145.
Scoring Depth: Tulsa boasts three of the top five goal scorers in the Central Hockey League. Right wing Michel Beausoleil, who netted his 24th goal of the season on Tuesday, sits in third place in the goal chase. Beausoleil is one goal shy of tying his best goal output as an Oiler. Adam Pleskach leads all CHL rookies with 24 goals and is tied with Beausoleil for third place while Ben Gordon has found the net 21 times this season and sits in fifth in the goal scoring race.
Home Was Not So Sweet: The Oilers finished up their season-long six-game home stand with a 2-3-1 record and registered just one point in the final four games. For the remainder of the regular season, the Oilers will not play more than two consecutive games at home or on the road.
Sputtering Starts: In each of the last four games, the Oilers have trailed after the first period. Tulsa has been outscored 8-2 in its last four first periods and is 0-3-1 in those contests. The Oilers have carried a lead into the second period just twice in the last ten games and have a record of 3-10-2 this season when falling behind after the opening frame.
Mavericks' Mastery: The Missouri Mavericks are Tulsa's version of hockey kryptonite. In seven meetings against the Mavs this season, the Oilers have seven regulation losses with each game decided by two goals or less. Dating back to last season, the Oilers have only victory in the last ten contests with Missouri and have earned just five wins in 22 all-time visits to the Independence Events Center. Tulsa and Missouri do not face off again until the final weekend of the regular season.
Lightening The Load: The Oilers will enjoy a lighter schedule in the coming weeks with only two games in the next 12 days. Tulsa remains the league leader in games played (43) and has the third lowest win percentage (.477) in the CHL. The Quad City Mallards, Tulsa's opponent this Friday, have a whopping eight games in hand on the Oilers. However, the gap in games played should get narrower as the Oilers will have at least one day off during every weekend in February and will not play another three-games-in-three-days series until mid-March.
