Tulsa 66ers News Release
TULSA, Okla., Dec. 1, 2006 - For the first time in franchise history, the Tulsa 66ers (2-1) eclipsed the .500 mark, thanks to a 105-102 victory over the Dakota Wizards (2-1) at Expo Square Pavilion Friday night.
Tulsa guard Denham Brown came off the bench to lead the way, scoring 21 points while also collecting eight rebounds. Dakota's James Maye paced the Wizards with the game-high 23 points.
Despite the inclement weather and the much-delayed travel to Oklahoma, Dakota shot out of the opening quarter with much energy. Dakota led 28-22 after the first quarter, due to a major advantage from the charity stripe. The Wizards were 13-of-15 from the line (29-of-38 for the game), while Tulsa was a mere 2-of-3 (21-of-27 for the game).
The 66ers opened it up in the second quarter using a 15-4 run to establish a seven-point-lead. Brown; Jean Felix, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds; and Will Conroy, leaving the game with 16 points and six assists, combined to score 29 of Tulsa's season-high 39 second quarter points to lead 61-48 at the break.
Not to be blown out, the Wizards went inside to center Justin Williams in the third quarter. Williams was key during a 10-0 Dakota run and netted 11 of his 15 points in the period. The Wizards trailed by only two (80-78) after the third.
Tulsa built the lead back up to nine after a triple by Jean Felix, who finished the night with 18 points and seven rebounds. Mustafa Al-Sayyad countered a couple of Dakota runs with buckets. Al-Sayyad finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.
"Al-Sayyad established himself early and knocked down some shots," said Tulsa head coach Joey Meyer. "That really seemed to give him some confidence."
Mike Hall was the 66ers sixth man in double-figure scoring with 15 points and adding seven rebounds.
Dakota got double-digit scoring from Brandon Armstrong with 18 points, Quemont Greer, Jerome Beasley and Renaldo Major each finishing with 13 points.
The Tulsa 66ers will take on the Dakota Wizards again on Saturday night at Expo Square Pavilion. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
On Saturday night, the 66ers celebrate the American Indian heritage by stocking the evening with special ceremonies, performances and artists. Saturday night will also mark the first installment of The Year of the Uniform promotion in which the first 1,066 fans to attend the game will receive a Year of the Uniform jersey, courtesy of Kivisto Family Foundation.
