Tucson Sugar Skulls News Release
TUCSON, AZ - The Tucson Sugar Skulls face a quick turnaround when they attempt to get back on track against the San Antonio Gunslingers in the heart of Texas on Thursday, April 18th with kickoff at 4:30 PM
There's No Place Like Home?
The Sugar Skulls fell short of triumphant glory in yet another home opener at Tucson Arena. Shockingly, the Skulls once again fell to the wayside of defeat in front of roaring fans galore by a score of 44-31 to Bay Area. Outside of their first win in franchise history back in 2019, Tucson has been defeated during home openers in four out of their last five seasons. There's always next time, right?
On the Road Again
Despite all of the hype surrounding the home opener, the Skulls could not live up to expectations. Still, Tucson's lone win this season happened to come against the Duke City Gladiators in Albuquerque.
Without a doubt, this team has high aspirations under the leadership of head coach Billy Back. Throughout his head coaching career, Back has not endured a whole lot of losing on his way to capturing five championships spread across various indoor teams. Over the years, Coach Back has instilled a business-like mindset in his teams, and the same type of psyche should be expected from these Sugar Skulls when they travel to the "Alamo City" on Thursday.
A Clean Pocket
At any level of football, protecting the quarterback while inside the pocket is essential. After surrendering four sacks to Bay Area over the weekend, it's safe to say that the Tucson coaching staff has prioritized doing everything in their power to keep QB Mylik Mitchell upright against San Antonio. When given the proper amount of time to dissect defenses, Mitchell is the main weapon for a Sugar Skulls offense that is averaging a lethal 45 points per game. Don't give this team the time to start clicking on all cylinders or else!
It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Robert Sheffield!
While the talk of the town has been about the offensive orchestrator in QB Mylik Mitchell, there is no question that DB Robert Sheffield deserves his flowers as well. Patrolling the Tucson secondary like a hawk swooping in for the kill, the former Georgetown College standout and three-time All-Conference performer is becoming one of the main leaders on this defense.
Through three games, Sheffield has recorded 11 tackles from his cornerback position and has a knack for pinpointing the football when it's in the air. Big things are in store for number four!
