Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson was down to its final out in the ninth inning Friday afternoon trailing 5-2, before the Sidewinders rallied for a stunning 6-5, ten inning win over Portland at PGE Park.

Juan Brito's three-run homer in the ninth off Beavers closer Brad Baker tied the game at 5. Baker was trying to earn his 20th save of the year but allowed singles to Conor Jackson and Corey Myers preceding Brito's two-out blast. Brito had struck out his first three at bats Friday, part of 13 K's for Sidewinder batters.

Corey Myers gave Tucson the 6-5 lead in the top of the tenth inning with a two-out single, plating Matt Kata.

Brandon Medders earned the win throwing two scoreless innings. Medders worked around two men on with no outs in the ninth getting a fielders choice and a double play to end the threat and force extra innings. Medders retired the Beavers in order and struck out Adam Hyzdu to end the game.

The Beavers jumped on Tucson starter Mark Freed with three first inning runs. Bobby Scales led off the frame with a solo home run. Freed's former college teammate Jon Knott (Mississippi State) added a two-run blast three batters later for an early 3-0 lead.

Portland increased the lead to 4-0 in the second when Scales singled in Lee Evans who had walked.

Tucson got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Kata singled, swiped second base and scored on a single by Jackson.

Sergio Santos produced an RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Hyzdu connected for Portland's third home run of the afternoon, a solo shot in the eighth inning increasing the Beavers lead to 5-2.

Tucson improved to 32-30 on the season. The Sidewinders and Beavers will meet in game three of the series Saturday night in a 7:05 p.m. game. Michael Gosling (3-3 6.21) will start for Tucson against the Beavers Clay Hensley (1-1 3.13). The game will air live on COOL 1450 AM.
