Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON - The big inning continues to bite the Asheville Tourists. On Friday the Charleston RiverDogs totaled 12 runs in three innings to defeat the Tourists 12-5. The RiverDogs scored four runs in the fourth inning but the Tourists overcame it. However, a five-run seventh inning was the clincher and Charleston added three more in the eighth.
Asheville took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Robert Metz, who was one of three players making his Tourists debut, doubled and then scored on Daniel Montano's RBI single. Coco Montes delivered an RBI single to plate Montano for the early two-run advantage.
Charleston countered with a four-run fourth but the Tourists would respond. LJ Hatch and LeeMarcus Boyd, the other two players making their first appearances for Asheville, both came through with hits in the top of the fifth. Boyd crossed home plate on a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4.
In the sixth Danny Edgeworth put Asheville back in front with an RBI single that scored Grant Lavigne. That would be Asheville's last hit and the one-run lead was not enough. The RiverDogs recaptured the advantage with five in the seventh and added three more in the eighth for additional insurance.
Charleston finished the game with 18 hits and also worked seven walks from the Tourists pitchers. Seven of the nine RiverDogs' hitters finished with two hits or more. Jake Bird pitched well out of Asheville's bullpen totaling 2.2 scoreless innings.
Both teams are back at it on Saturday night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park with the first pitch slated for 6:05pm.
