Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Two unearned runs made the difference in a game the Suns lost 5-3 to the Delmarva Shorebirds Friday night at Municipal Stadium.
Tomas Alastre (L, 3-8) got out to a slow start, allowing four runs in the first three innings. JC Encarnacion started the scoring against Alastre in the first, smoking a double 106.1 MPH off his bat to plate Robert Neustrom .
The Shorebirds (56-22, 8-1) kept things going in the second inning. After a Nick Horvath walk, Seamus Curran pushed his first homer of the season over the right field wall to give Delmarva a 3-0 lead.
Hagerstown (32-47, 2-7) fought back to make the game 4-3 in the fifth. Nic Perkins hit the lone extra-base hit for the Suns, a double to score Kyle Marinconz to draw the Suns within two in the second.
Jacob Rhinesmith grounded into a double play to score Armond Upshaw with no one out and runners on the corners in the third. The Suns scoring finished in the fifth when Upshaw grounded out to plate Cole Daily to make it a 4-3 game.
The score stayed that way until the eighth. Horvath reached on a fielding error from Jackson Cluff and later scored on a Curran single.
Cluff finished the night 0-for-3, snapping his hitting streak at six-games.
The pen looked strong for a second consecutive evening. Chris Vann spun 2.1 innings, wringing up four batters and allowing just one, unearned run before handing the ball to Jared Brasher , who completed the game after 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
The Suns continue their series against Delmarva tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Hagerstown sends righty Reid Schaller (0-0, 8.10 ERA) to the bump, while Delmarva counters with LHP Nick Vespi (4-4, 3.72 ERA).
The Suns are in the midst of a seven-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The stretch includes plenty of promotions, including Halfway to Christmas, tomorrow night, Sunday Funday and Salute to America.
