Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
CHARLESTON, W.V. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (5-4, 33-44) used consistent hitting throughout their entire lineup to defeat the West Virginia Power (4-5, 41-38) 7-4 on Friday Night.
It didn't take long for Kannapolis to get the scoring started in this one. On the second pitch of the game on an 0-1 count, Ian Dawkins hit his third homer of the season to put the Intimidators up 1-0 early.
West Virginia had some first inning scoring of their own. Bobby Honeyman doubled to score Ryan Ramiz, and then Onil Pena hit a sac fly to center to Julio Rodriguez in the bottom of the first to give the Power a 2-1 lead after one.
Wasting no time to even things back up, in the top of the second inning, Michael Hickman grounded out and scored Romy Gonzalez to tie us at 2-2.
Over the next couple innings, the teams continued to trade punches. Rodriguez hit a solo home run (3) for West Virginia in the bottom of the third to give them a 3-2 lead, but in the top of the fourth, Hickman instantly answered with a solo shot (5) of his own to making things 3-3.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that Kannapolis was able to start to pull away. Johan Cruz grounded into a force out that scored Bryce Bush. Amado Nunez then singled to score Corey Zangari. Finally, Lenyn Sosa singled to score Cruz and Hickman. At the end of it all, the Intimidators took a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
West Virginia did get one back in the bottom of that frame after a wild pitch from Kannapolis' starter Johan Dominguez (W, 4-3) to cut the deficit to 7-4.
This brought an end to Dominguez's day; 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 4 BB. Kevin Folman came in for relief and pitched 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings while recording five strikeouts in the process. Austin Conway came in for the save to finish things out to give Kannapolis the 7-4 win.
The Intimidators continue their series with West Virginia Saturday Night at 6:05 p.m., as Sam Long (3-1, 3.79 ERA) will take the mound for Kannapolis.
