Tromp's Walkoff Double in Extra Innings Leads Champions to 6-5 Win over New Jersey

OTTAWA - Jiandido Tromp hit a walkoff double in the bottom of the eleventh to propel the Ottawa Champions to a 6-5 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Wednesday.

Tromp hit a fastball off Dylan Brammer that looked like it might clear the wall, ultimately falling short but Jay Gonzalez was unable to wrangle the ball, allowing Chris Bosco and Leonardo Reginatto to score, ending the game.

"I was just trying to stay short," said Tromp about his walkoff. "(Brammer) was pretty filthy so I was just trying to look for a fastball and drive it. I hit it pretty good but this is a big field so I knew it was going to fall, but thankfully it fell and we got the walkoff."

Champions manager Sébastien Boucher thought Tromp adjusted to the pitches he was seeing and played the at-bat well.

"Tromp has been mainly pulling against these guys," said Boucher, "so he was playing a little bit more in and it kind of paid off in our favour. He ambushed a fastball away and just went with and was able to put barrel on it."

The Champions trailed for the majority of the game but continued to claw their way back and took a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth.

Brian Portelli reached second on an error from Jackals left fielder Alfredo Marte that scored Steve Brown, tying the game 3-3. Ottawa took the lead on the next at-bat on a passed ball on ball four that allowed Vinny Guglietti to score. It looked like it was over for the Champions when Jay Gonzalez hit a sac fly to left in the top of the eleventh to put the Jackals ahead, but Ottawa continued to battle.

Jordan Kurokawa (0-2) went seven innings, striking out five with four walks and two earned runs on eight hits. Austin Glorious (2-1) earned the win after taking over for Evan Rutckyj in the tenth when Rutckyj blew a save opportunity.

"Austin did what he's been doing," said Boucher. "He's been solid for us and it's good for him to give him some work in pressure situations and he's responding well."

The Jackals took a 3-1 lead in the fifth after an error from catcher Andy Mocahbee allowed Emilio Guerrero to score from third.

Maikol Gonzalez cut the score to 2-1 with a single to right that scored Reginatto from second.

New Jersey opened the scoring in the second off of a single up the middle from Demetrius Moorer that drove in Jason Agresti. They made it 2-0 the next inning on a sac fly from Richard Stock that scored Conrad Gregor.

Justin Brantley (4-1) struck out three for the Jackals with three walks and two earned runs on five hits. Brammer (0-1) was credited with the loss.

The Champions look for a series sweep when they close out the series with New Jersey tomorrow at RCGT Park at 7 p.m. Phillippe Aumont will be on the bump for Ottawa.
