Tribe offense explodes in 13-0 blanking of Syracuse
July 19, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Shortstop Jorge Velandia and first baseman Brad Eldred combined to go 7-for-7 with two homers, three doubles, five runs and five RBI, while right-hander Bryan Bullington turned in his longest scoreless outing since May 28, 2003, as Indianapolis powered its way to a 13-0 blanking of Syracuse Tuesday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians, who have won six straight at the friendly confines and nine of their last 11 overall, improve to 57-39 with the victory. The SkyChiefs fall to 48-49 on the season.
Velandia, who went 4-for-4 on the night, set individual season highs for runs (3), doubles (3), hits (4) and total bases (7).
Eldred, who registered a 3-for-3 performance, launched his 12th and 13th roundtrippers to go along with four RBI. The 6-foot-5, 268-pound slugger has collected 10 runs, 18 RBI, a .350 batting average (14-for-40) and .975 slugging percentage (39 total bases in 40 ABs) over his last 11 contests. He has also belted eight dingers over his last nine contests.
Bullington (6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO) earned the victory, improving to 5-3. The top selection in the 2002 June draft kept Syracuse hitters on their toes the entire night, posting his longest scoreless outing since a seven-inning masterpiece for High-A Lynchburg (Va.) over two seasons ago.
Catcher Ronny Paulino, CF Nate McLouth and 2B Cesar Crespo also notched two hits apiece for the Indians, who pounded out 17 base knocks on the evening.
Syracuse threatened in the first -- using a pair of Indianapolis miscues to put two runners in scoring position with just one out -- but Bullington worked out of the jam by recording two crucial strikeouts. The contest was never close from that point forward.
The Indians scored in six consecutive innings for the first time in 2005, plating two runs in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Eldred's two-run shot to left field got the home team on the board in the second. McLouth's RBI double to left field, a double steal and Paulino's two-bagger down the left-field line did the damage in the third, while the fourth frame was highlighted by 3B Ty Wigginton's three-run bomb to center.
Catcher Joe DePastino went 2-for-4 for the SkyChiefs. RHP Josue Matos (4.0 IP, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 5-2.
The same two teams return to Victory Field Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., for game three of the four-game series. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy call all the action. Wednesday's pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
