Gwinnett Stripers News Release
TONIGHT'S GAME: The second of a four game home and home series and the eighth of 16 meetings. The sixth of eight here. The Braves are 3-4 vs. the Bulls, 2-3 at The Diamond. Game 13 of a 13 game homestand (3-9). The Braves were 4-3 at home vs. the Bulls last season. Richmond is 8-14 vs. the South Division, 4-8 at home. The Braves are looking for their third straight win. That would equal a season high. The Braves have won three straight twice this season. The last time was May 13-15. Richmond is fourth in the South, three games behind third place Charlotte. The Bulls are second in the South, 8.5 games out of first. Richmond is 53-68 all-time vs. Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves edged the Bulls 7-6 in 12 innings Monday night at The Diamond. The Braves overcame a 6-0 deficit to win back to back games for the first time since June 19 and 20. The Bulls jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three home runs in the fourth. Earl Snyder cracked a two-run homer. Josh Phelps hammered a homer and Tim Laker smacked a home run. Pete LaForest singled a run home in the fifth to make it 5-0. The Bulls added a run in the sixth on an error. The Braves started to battle back with four runs in the last of the sixth. Scott Thorman tripled two home and Andy Marte bashed a two-run homer. The Braves tied the game in the seventh with a sacrifice bunt, two errors, and a wild pitch. Both clubs threatened in extra-innings before Andy Marte singled Kerry Robinson in the 12th to give the Braves the win. Jeremy Ward picked up the win. Jason Roach took the loss. Marte had three hits and three RBI. Five Bulls had two hits each.
THE ROSTER: RHP Kyle Davies joins the Braves today. To make room the Braves sent RHP Kevin Barry to Double-A Mississippi. The Braves roster now stands at 24 (12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and three outfielders). RHP Roman Colon has been optioned to Richmond and will be added to the roster later this week. Four players are on the DL. The Braves have made 90 roster moves this season and lost 238 man-games to the disabled list. Nine Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and two are currently with Atlanta (Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other seven big league call-ups were Davies, Colon, Andy Marte, Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Seth Greisinger, and Brayan Pena.
CRUNCHY NUMBERS: Esix Snead leads the IL in stolen bases. Snead has hits in five straight games (8-18 .444). Recent R-Braves acquisition Kerry Robinson still leads the PCL in steals with 26. Richmond has a better winning percentage on the road (.346) than at home (.313). Scott Pratt is 10 for his last 21 (.476) and has a five game hitting streak. He has started at every position except pitcher and catcher this season. James Jurries six game hitting streak ended last night. Andy Marte is four for his last eight with two home runs and five RBI. Brayan Pena has hits in four straight games (5-12 .417). Frank Brooks has appeared in six straight games without allowing a run.
SEND âEM HOME HAPPY: Last night Richmond won a game with a walk-off base hit for the seventh time this season. Marte joins James Jurries, (ninth inning single vs. Louisville 7/14), Michael Rosamond, (12th inning single vs. Rochester 6/7), Bill McCarthy (single in the ninth 5/27 vs. Scranton/WB), Derrick Gibson (single in the 13th vs. Charlotte 5/3), Jason Bourgeois (double in the 11th vs. Louisville 4/18), and Mike O'Keefe (home run in the ninth vs. Norfolk 5/1) in sending the Braves home with a win.
