Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Louisville Bats plated five runs over the final two innings, led by three RBI from center fielder Chris Heisey and two runs each by catcher Ryan Hanigan and right fielder Jay Bruce to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 7-4 in front of a sell-out crowd of 15,461 in Saturday night's 2009 home finale at Victory Field.

With the loss the Indians fall to 69-71 overall and 36-36 at home, while the Bats improve to 82-57 overall and 38-31 on the road with the win. The victory for Louisville gives them the 3-0 series sweep and pushes their season advantage to 13-6 with just two games remaining between the two clubs.

Indianapolis jumped out to the early lead with four runs over the first three innings, including single tallies in the first and second and two runs in the third. However, Louisville rallied back with two runs in the fourth, three in the eighth and two insurance tallies in the ninth.

The Tribe got on the board first, when CF Brian Bixler led off the frame with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Pedro Lopez and trotted home when 1B Larry Broadway came through with a clutch two-out base hit. Indianapolis extended their lead to 2-0 in the following inning, when C Robinzon Diaz led off the second with a double to center, moved to third on a single by C Hector Gimenez and came around to score when SS Argenis Diaz collected an RBI groundout.

Broadway then powered the Tribe to a 4-0 lead when he blasted a two-out two-run long ball to deep right field in the third inning, scoring LF Tagg Bozied, who reached on a double earlier in the frame. The home run for Broadway was his eighth on the season and his first since July 18, while the multi-dimensional left hander also added an inning of relief to cap one his best all around performances on the season.

Spotted a 4-0 lead, Tribe starter Jeremy Powell (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) locked-in and dominated over seven solid innings of work. The Indians' right hander allowed just two runs (one earned) on seven hits, struck out three and walked just one in what was his longest outing of the season.

However, Powell would not figure in the decision as the Bats rallied with three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to spoil the Indians' home finale.

Louisville first got on the board in the fourth, when Hanigan and Bruce led off the frame with back-to-back singles, moved into scoring position on anther base hit by 3B Juan Francisco and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Heisey and a Tribe miscue on the same play.

The Bats then tied and pushed ahead of the Tribe with three runs in the eighth sparked by Bruce, who led off the frame with a base hit, stole second, moved to third on another Indianapolis error and came around to score on a Tribe passed ball. Heisey then came through yet again when he tied the score by bringing home Francisco on a double to deep left field.

Pinch hitter Todd Frazier then untied the score as he brought home Heisey with a double of his own to give the Bats their first lead of the game at 5-4. Louisville would then tack on two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, led as they were all night by Hanigan, Bruce and Heisey.

Hanigan led off the rally with a one-out base hit, moved to third on a single by Bruce, and trotted home when 1B Wes Bankston reached on a fielder's choice. Then after a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch moved Bankston to third, Heisey came through with a base hit to plate Bankston for his third RBI of the contest.

Hanigan (3-for-5, 2 R), Bruce (3-for-5, 2 R) and Heisey (2-for-4, 1 R, 3 RBI) all turned in multi-hit performances for Louisville, while Bixler (2-for-5, 1 R), Broadway (3-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Gimenez (2-for-4) all collected multiple base knocks for the Tribe.

Bats' starter Camilo Vazquez (5.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) did not figure in the final decision as he allowed all four Tribe runs on nine hits in just 5.2 innings of work. In relief of Vazquez, the Louisville bullpen was brilliant as relievers Federico Baez (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 SO), Jeff Kennard (1.0 IP) and Logan Ondrusek (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Baez earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Kennard collected his seventh hold and Ondrusek was credited with his 12th save of the season.

Indians' reliever Jorge Julio (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 SO) suffered the loss and blown save to fall to 0-3 on the season as he allowed three runs on three hits in just an inning of work. Broadway (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER) also tossed an inning out of the Indianapolis bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits in his fourth relief outing of the season.

Indianapolis wraps up its 2009 season with a two-game set at Louisville on Sunday and Monday. Indians RHP Yoslan Herrera is scheduled to take the hill in the series opener at 6:15 p.m., while RHP Sam LeCure is expected to get the nod for the Bats.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 5:55 p.m.

Post-game quote -- 1B Larry Broadway

(on what was working at the plate)

"I haven't had many at-bats against lefties this year, so I was just trying to see the ball and not do too much. I was just trying to be as patience as long as I could and I was able to recognize pitches a little better."

(on the transition from first base to relief pitching)

"I'm not a pitcher, so I just try to throw strikes. We have a limited bullpen and 16 innings last night killed everybody. I don't throw bullpen sessions or anything like that, so I just went in there and tried to throw strikes. I just tried to get some outs any way possible and eat up some innings and save the bullpen."

(on his key memory of this season)

"I was hurt a lot of the year, so it wasn't a good season for me. There are a lot of good guys on this team and I like the organization and the staff. Victory Field is a great place to play and obviously we want to win a championship. Anytime you're in the game, you play to win a championship and not winning one this season is a disappointment."
