Triantos Homer Sends Pelicans over RiverDogs

With the game tied at two in the eighth inning, James Triantos hit a go-ahead solo home run to secure the second win of the week for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans over the Charleston RiverDogs. The win moved Myrtle Beach back into a tie for the top spot in the Carolina League, South Division standings as both teams hold 21-11 records. Saturday was also Military Appreciation Night at Pelicans Ballpark as the Birds wore specialty jerseys that were raffled off to active-duty military and veterans during the game.

Two solo home runs lifted the Pelicans to victory as Triantos (1-3, HR, RBI, BB) and Ezequiel Pagan (1-3, HR, RBI) both left the yard in Saturday night's win. Ethan Hearn (1-4, 3B, RBI, R) and Reginald Preciado (1-3, RBI) also helped the hitting effort. The Pelicans scored in the final three frames to complete the comeback.

Jose Miguel Gonzalez (3-0) locked the RiverDogs down out of the bullpen with a season-high 4 1/3 innings with just one earned run allowed off four hits. Jake Reindl collected his second save by striking out three in the final inning after allowing a hit and a walk.

Charleston's bats fell flat as Oneill Manzueta (2-3, RBI, BB) posted the only multi-hit game for a team that tallied just five base knocks. Dru Baker (0-2, RBI, BB) found the basepaths three times while driving in the other run with a groundout in the first.

Christian Fernandez (2-1) took the loss after sacrificing all four runs off five hits in his 3 1/3 innings. Fernandez walked two and struck out six in the loss. RiverDogs' starter Daiveyon Whittle opened with the first three scoreless innings while striking out two and allowing two hits. Charleston committed two errors in the field for their most in a game this series.

Charleston took the lead first for the fifth consecutive game as a run came home in the opening frame. Shane Sasaki led off with a walk and quickly stole second base. Carson Williams followed with a walk and both runners stole on Pelicans' starter Tyler Schlaffer to put two runners in scoring position. Baker grounded out to first to bring in Sasaki for the game's first run.

The game would remain 1-0 RiverDogs until the sixth when Charleston tacked on one more in the top half. Ramirez led off with a double to right field on the first pitch of the frame. Ramirez stole third as Luis Leon walked to put runners on the corners. After Michael Berglund popped out in the infield, Manzueta lined a single up the middle to score Ramirez and extend the RiverDogs lead to 2-0.

Myrtle Beach's response came quickly as Pagan lifted the second pitch of the bottom of the sixth over the right-field wall to put the Birds on the board. The Pelicans would go on to leave runners on first and third to end the inning.

The Pelicans would tie the game in the seventh as Hearn drove a triple into the right-center field alley with one out. He came home on Preciado's single to right to even the game at two.

Momentum kept flowing the Pelicans' way as the game was decided in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-0 count, Triantos flew a ball down the left-field line that just stayed fair as it landed on top of the bleachers for a solo home run. His first homer of the season gave Myrtle Beach a 3-2 lead. The Pelicans then walked three times with Kevin Made flying out to load the bases with one gone. Hearn reached first on a bouncer to left that scored Kevin Alcantara as BJ Murray Jr. was thrown out at third base for a force-out.

Reindl came out for the ninth inning and struck out Sasaki to get things started. Williams worked a walk and Baker struck out as Bobby Seymour came up as the final chance for the RiverDogs. Seymour grounded a single to left to put the tying run on board with two outs. Reindl struck out Ramirez to finish the game and give the Pelicans the win.

The Pelicans will strive for the series tie on Sunday night with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m.
