Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. "" A one-run lead got away from the Everett AquaSox in the late innings and turned into another one-run defeat at Everett Memorial Stadium Saturday as the Tri-City Dust Devils rallied for a 3-2 win in game two of the series.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Dust Devils struck for two runs to take a 3-2 lead. Shane Hoelscher drew a walk from Ramire Cleto to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Roberto Ramos, clubbed a game-tying, RBI double off the batter's eye in center. It appeared that AquaSox center fielder Wilton Ramirez, who normally plays right but was in center with Austin Cousino starting at designated hitter, lost the ball in the lights. Sam Bumpers followed Ramos by flaring a ball to right. Right fielder Corey Simpson laid out to make a diving catch, only to have the ball glance off his glove for a triple, allowing the slow-footed Ramos to come home with what turned out to be the winning run.
The AquaSox got the tying run aboard in the bottom of the ninth, but Cousino was stranded at first as Josh Michalec picked up his first save and sent the "ËSox to their fourth straight one-run loss and sixth in their past seven games. Tri-City struck first Saturday when Ramos crushed a fastball from Everett starter Ryan Yarbrough into the net above the scoreboard in right for a solo homer and a 1-0 lead.
Everett answered with runs in the third and fourth to take its first lead of the series. Jordan Cowan led off the third with a bunt single and the Dust Devils third baseman Hoelscher threw the ball away down the right field line for a two-base error. With Cowan on third, Cousino grounded out to second base to bring home the tying run. In the fourth, Sheehan Planas-Arteaga lined a leadoff double to right, his first hit at home this season, and then scored the go-ahead run from third when Taylor Smart delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle.
But that would be all for the AquaSox against the Dust Devils as Everett went 1-14 with men in scoring position and dropped its sixth straight series to start the season. Tri-City starter Blake Shouse went five innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out three. Dylan Thompson (2-1) earned the win out of the bullpen after working 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Ramos had three legs of the cycle, with a homer, double, and single, and had two RBI. Cleto (1-2) was saddled with the loss in long relief as he surrendered two runs on three hits.
There were some bright spots in the losing effort. With a fastball sitting 92-93 and touching 95, the left-handed Yarbrough dominated in his three innings of work, aside from the homer by Ramos. Making his first professional start after he taken in the 4th round this year out of Old Dominion, Yarbrough allowed three hits, one of which was a bunt, and struck out seven in the no decision. Adam Martin extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the seventh inning.
The Frogs (5-18) will attempt to break a nine-game losing streak at Everett Memorial Stadium and avoid being dealt their second straight sweep at home in the finale of the three-game series with Tri-City (10-13) Sunday at 4:05. Lukas Schiraldi, son of ex-Big Leaguer Calvin Schiraldi, will make his professional debut when he gets the start on the mound for the Frogs against Tri-City's Tyler Gagnon (0-3, 6.11).
