Trenton Scores Late, Holds Off Binghamton 8-5

(Binghamton, NY)- LF Colin Curtis had four hits and scored three runs to lead the Thunder to an 8-5 win over Binghamton on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton. Curtis scored the go-ahead run in Trenton's three-run 8th inning. Trenton finished its seven-game road trip at 5-2.
With the game tied 4-4 in the 8th inning, Curtis hit the first pitch of the inning from Binghamton reliever Eude Brito into right-center field for a leadoff triple. After DH Matt Carson grounded out, 1B Cody Ehlers drove home Curtis with the go-ahead run on a double to make it 5-4. Carlos Mendoza pinch-ran for Ehlers and scored two batters later on an RBI single by C P.J. Pilittere to increase the lead to 6-4. Trenton (12-9) capped off the inning with an RBI single by 3B Chris Malec for a 7-4 lead.
Binghamton (9-10) cut the Trenton lead to 7-5 in the 8th inning but would not get any closer. Binghamton DH Mike Carp, who had three hits and 2 RBI, drove home 1B Nick Evans with an RBI double. Trenton RHP David Robertson came on with one out in the 8th inning and retired all five batters that he faced including 4 strikeouts. Robertson picked up his second save for Trenton. Thunder reliever Michael Gardner (2-1) got the win going 2.1 IP of relief for Thunder starter Chase Wright. Trenton scored an insurance run in the 9th inning on an RBI double by Curtis. CF Austin Jackson extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double leading off the 9th inning.
Down 4-2 in the 6th inning, Trenton tied the game with an RBI single by RF Jose Tabata and an RBI double by Pilittere. The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on an RBI double by Carson. Binghamton led 2-1, until Ehlers connected on his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the 4th inning.
Trenton starting pitcher Chase Wright received a no-decision, as he was denied a win his fourth straight start. Wright went 5 IP and gave up 8 H and 4 R (3 earned). Binghamton starting pitcher Jake Ruckle went 5 IP and gave up 5 H and 3 ER.
Trenton returns home on Thursday to start a four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP George Kontos (0-2, 4.26) will start for Trenton against Binghamton RHP Johan Pino (0-0, 0.69).
