New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - New Britain 3B Luke Hughes banged out 4 hits - including two long homeruns - and drove in 5 to lead the host Rock Cats to a 15-6 win today over the Reading Phillies at New Britain Stadium. The Rock Cats batted around in three different innings in the course of mounting a 21-hit attack that overcame a brilliant beginning by Reading's starting pitcher, Carlos Carrasco. The Philadephia organization's #1 prospect, the right-handed Carrasco fanned the first five Rock Cats he faced.
Reading took an early 4-0 lead when they collected 5 hits in the 3rd off New Britain starter, Oswaldo Sosa. The 23-year-old Hughes' first HR came in the home half of the same frame when he belted a shot over the 400' sign in centerfield.
Trailing 4-1, New Britain took the lead for good in the 4th when they posted 5 runs on six hits, including a bases-clearing double by 2B Felix Molina and Hughes' second HR of the day, this one over the LF wall.
Reading managed to cut the lead to 6-5 when LF Jake Blalock belted his first round-tripper of the year off New Britain middle reliever - and eventual winner - Jay Sawatski. Blalock's was the only hit allowed by Sawatski over 3 full innings of work.
New Britain sent 10 men to the plate in the 6th inning, collecting 7 hits and 5 more runs. They batted around again in the 8th, plating their final 4 runs on 3 more hits.
Molina ended the day with 3 hits and matched Hughes with 5 RBI; SS Trevor Plouffe finished with 3 hits for the Rock Cats. Reading SS Neil Sellers belted his second homerun of the year in the 3rd inning; he finished the day with 3 RBI.
While Sawatski recorded his first W of the year, LHP Kyle Aselton pitched 3 effective innings out of the New Britain bullpen and earned his first Eastern League Save. Carrasco allowed 6 runs on 10 hits and took the loss for Reading, dropping his record to 1-2.
The morning game was witnessed by 5,799 fans at New Britain Stadium.
