Trenton Picks Up Big Win

(Portland, ME)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister tossed 7 2/3 strong innings to lead the Thunder to a critical 5-2 over Portland on Thursday night from Hadlock Field. The Thunder took two out of three in the series at Portland, and wins the season-series over the Sea Dogs 7-6. When Trenton's game was completed, New Britain's game against Reading was still in progress. If New Britain wins, the Rock Cats will stay two games in front of Trenton for second place in the Northern Division with four games to go. If Reading wins, Trenton moves to one game behind New Britain with four games to go.

Trenton took a a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci walked to start the inning against Portland Starting Pitcher Kris Johnson (0-3). He advanced to third base on a single by Left fielder James Cooper. Center fielder Austin Krum followed with a single to score Vechionacci and give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez singled home Cooper to make it 2-0. Nunez went 2 x 4 with two RBI in the win.

Portland scratched a run across in the fourth inning off of McAllister (7-5). Center fielder Ryan Kalish walked to start the inning, and then moved to third base on a single by Third baseman Jorge Jimenez.Kalish scored on a double-play ground ball off of the bat of First baseman Jon Still.Portland grounded into three double-plays in the game.

The Thunder scored three insurance runs in the eighth inning off of the Portland bullpen.Left fielder James Cooper singled to start the inning off of Portland Reliever Derrick Loop.After a sacrifice bunt by Krum, Cusick walked to put runners at first and second base.Shortstop Eduardo Nunez then singled home Cooper.Designated Hitter Noah Hall and First baseman Chris Malec each followed with RBI singles to increase the lead to 5-1.Trenton had five hits in the inning. Loop allowed four hits and three runs in 1/3 innings.

McAllister tied his season-high with 7 2/3 innings. He allowed only four hits and one run. McAllister also pitched 7 2/3 innings at Hadlock field on June 5th. Tonight was just his second win since June 5th. Johnson was a tough-luck loser.He allowed four hits and two runs over seven innings.

Trenton opens up a season-ending four-game series with New Britain on Wednesday night. LHP Jeremy Bleich (3-6, 6.39) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Deolis Guerra (6-3, 4.92). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
