Trenton Defeats Binghamton 6-4 And Takes A 2-1 Series Lead

July 13, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)- The Thunder offense got off to a slow start in this one, but once they got rolling, they did not let up. Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Thunder trailed the game 3-0, but they ended up sending nine batters to the plate, and they would tie it up on RBI singles by DH Edwar Gonzalez and SS Reegie Corona, as well as an RBI walk with the bases loaded by 3B Chris Malec. Binghamton, however, would come right back in the top of the sixth inning.

C Solomon Manriquez for Bighamton hit a two out double to right field with nobody on base, and DH Mike Nickeas would follow him with an RBI single to left field to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. However, that would be all the scoring the B-Mets would end up doing, as RHP Mark Melancon came on in relief for RHP Jason Jones in the seventh inning, and he pitched three innings of scoreless baseball to get his fourth victory of the season. Melancon went three innings pitched, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out one. Jones got the no-decision by going six innings pitched, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned), two walks, and he struck out three batters.

The Thunder trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when their bats came alive once again. In an almost mirror image of the fifth inning, the Thunder sent seven batters to the plate this time, scoring three more runs. The big blow in the inning was the two-run single to right field by Chris Malec, who went two-for-two in the ballgame with three RBI and two walks. The Thunder took a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning, a lead they would not relinquish.

The final game of the series will be played tomorrow at 12:05 PM as the Thunder will try to take the series three games to one and head into the All-Star break on a positive note.
